Understanding Medical Provider Networks (MPNs)

In California, most employers use Medical Provider Networks (MPNs) to provide care for injured workers. An MPN is a group of doctors and other healthcare providers approved by the employer's insurance company.

Your Rights

  • You can choose your treating physician within the MPN
  • You can switch doctors within the MPN
  • After 30 days, you may be able to treat with your own doctor (if pre-designated)
  • You can request a second opinion within the MPN

How to Find MPN Doctors

  1. Contact your employer's HR department to get MPN information
  2. Ask the claims adjuster for a list of approved physicians
  3. Use the MPN online directory provided by the insurance company
  4. Call the MPN access line for help finding specialists
